QUALITY TIME

  July/August 2000

This month, I am led to share some important facts about Quiet Time. The most important aspect of Quiet Time is the quality of Quiet Time. It is so important not to view Quiet Time as a ritual or another obligation added to our already overwhelming schedules. The focus is to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. One where we look forward to the wonderful things we will discover about Him and the exciting things we will learn from His Word. I can assure you of one thing and that is, as you delve into God's Word, you will be amazed at how much you will learn about yourself, God and life itself.  Actually, what you learn will give you a sense of meaning and purpose that can be found no where else in the entire world.

Did you know that when you get an unquenchable yearning for "something,"   it is a thirst

for God.  Better yet, did you know that it is God who created the yeaning in each of us?   It is true.

PSALM  42:1

PSALM  63:10

MATTHEW  4:4

Why do we seem to have a problem spending time with God?   The problem is that we seek to meet this yearning with drugs, alcohol, food, sex, relationship, people, places and material possessions.  We erroneously believe that what we need is more money, a husband, wife, house, better job, a better marriage or a relationship.  We even try to fill this void with church service and attendance.  But I want you to know there is no substitute for Jesus.

No matter how much, how long, how good, how much more of anything you accumulate, it will not satisfy the yearning inside. That is what causes alcoholism, workaholism, greed, selfishness and other addictions. These addictions create desires for more and more and never reaching satisfaction.  We think, once we get this or that, we will be satisfied.  But, usually we are off seeking something else.

I read something once that I totally agree with and it is appropriate here. There is nothing wrong with having things, what is wrong is when those things have us. How can you know when the things in your life have you?  A good measuring rod is your time. What do you spend most of your free time doing?  Does God have elbow room in your daily life or is He at the center of your daily life?

Another measuring rod would be the accessibility of your life to God. Do you divide your life into categories: work life, home life, church life, family life and personal life? Does God have access to those lives or do you also have a religious life that you live on Sundays or Saturdays?

I am often challenged to examine the accessibility of my life to God. We can assume that too much of anything is not good. Or that there is a time for everything. These theories may be true, but how can they relate to God. How much is too much of God? What part of time can we authorize to Him or exclude from Him when in fact, He is the eternal Creator of time?

The answer is that we should seek to be forever mindful of God and allow Him total and complete access to our lives while surrendering everything to Him. He is worthy of such devotion since we would cease to exist without Him. If He were to take back just one breath or not allowed another heart beat, we would die!

TIMES OF LACK

Once you become accustomed to spending Quiet Time with the Lord, a sudden disruption can tremendously affect you.  I experience this every time I go on vacation and there is a change of environment and schedule which disrupts my daily Quiet Time.  I would be able to spend time in prayer and the Word, but not at the same level of consistency and quality when at home. After a while, I begin to feel homesick.  But, not for a place, rather, for a Person. The first thing I do when I return home is resume my Quiet Time schedule and reunite in fellowship with my Lord and Savior.

I thank the Lord for firmly establishing in my heart a desire to spend consistent time with Him. This is something He does and it is for my good. He does all things well.
